The Black Hills of South Dakota that is. The Black Hills are an ecological mix of Rocky Mountains and Great Plains. Today we left Wyoming and crossed the state line into South Dakota. We are still having great weather; the temperature was in the mid 60's when we started the day and got into the high 90's by mid afternoon. The sky was sunny, but partly cloudy, and the winds were still at our backs most of the day. The landscape changed from desert with interesting land and rock formations with wide-open views to open range land with green pastures decorated with yellow and orange wild flowers and rolling hills. We saw a lot more cattle and horses today, than we seen in awhile. As we crossed over into South Dakota we started to climb back into higher elevations and the landscape changed into into Ponderosa Pine forest and the rocky mountains of the Black Hills. We had a 4 mile climb at mile 71, but the grades were only 4 to 5% and the roads were decent to ride on. Overall it was a great day!!
Tomorrow we have a big climbing day as we climb up and over Mt Rushmore!!
